Beyond Snapshots

I get asked a LOT by friends, family and clients about taking photos and recommending places to learn. I am primarily self taught having taken classes in photography at highschool, uni and tafe over the years but most I have learnt myself by reading, practising a lot and trial and error. There are some great books out there to read and learn the basics but you can learn a lot by reading online, for FREE! Check out this site which is set up by two female photogs to teach people how to take great photos themselves....

2010 - already!

Well 2009 most certainly flew by. I had a good year, it was very busy for photos especially heading towards Christmas as the Perth weather warmed up and people got moving out and about. Personally, I tackled the greater portion of a Graduate Diploma in Education this year which was incredibly interesting for me as a parent and nice to be back studying again despite the overnighters to get assignments in on time. 2010 will be spent finishing the one year long practical component unit and the ATP in term 3 - NOT looking forward to that one bit and may put it off another year. I'm in no hurry it was mainly for my own personal interest that I decided to do it. My three kids all grew about three inchs and for the most part it was the first year of having all my children at school but although I had more time I just crammed it full of more work and study. It was fun, challenging and tiring in equal portions. I also missed my kids.
2009 saw several beautiful friends of mine go through some extremely challenging times. Some I was able to be there for and others I wasn't although my heart was always with them. It was hard emotionally watching on from afar yet there is nothing you can do to really change anything. I hope 2010 sees good health and happiness for all my friends and family.

For the summer holidays I am going to attempt a personal project taking one photo every day. In reality I take photos several days a week and usually hundreds at a time, but this usually isn't of my own family. I have a little point and shoot Olympus that I take the happy snaps of my family life with nothing flash just capturing the memories and then once or twice a month I drag the gear out and take some photos of the kids. For January I plan on taking at least one half decent shot every day - simple just one photo of my life that makes me smile. I will post them here in batches. Pretty sure it won't be every day that I post but I will at least take that photo every day.

I have had a very long week cramming in as much processing as possible to make sure everyone has their galleries up by easter. I hate being behind with work so here I am at 3am and nearly up to date - hurray!

Leukaemia Foundation

The great thing about never updating the blog is that I have so many beautiful images that I get to revisit with when I do. I have just prepared about 30 images for posting from the past months that never made it to the blog, the plan is that now I have them ready I can do some regular posting ;)

So a few weeks ago I posted about my participation in the Leukaemia Foundations Worlds Greatest Shave. I am very thrilled to have been able to raise just under $3.4K to provide practical care and support to patients and families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders. I have yet to update my official 'portrait' but you can view photos of me with my new 'do' on the Leukaemia Foundations website taken by photographer Lauren Parlet who was roped into the job on the night - thanks Lauren!

Well you blink and it is February and all that is here is the echo of my own voice.

So yes, I'm still here. Yes, I'm still working. Yes, life is crazy busy.
Yes, I have about a gazillion sessions to post.

For now I promised my friends I would share the gorgeously beautiful babies that I spent my weekend with. You could not have asked for more perfect models, they ate when they were told, slept when they were told and let me do my thing. What bliss.
I mean really could it be any sweeter than this! I photographed this little chick when she was a newborn and her older brother when he was a newborn too. What a privilege. They are all the most awesomely sweet - and well behaved children. Good work mum & dad :)

Pre-Kindy

Ohh this is late all the parents will be hunting me down!! This ones mum reminded me!!

For the last couple of years I have had the pleasure of photographing the local pre-kindy kids, they are mainly three year olds and almost always an absolute delight. Summer's coming!

How beautiful the last few days have been, just devine weather. Yesterday the kids had the very first swim in our new pool which was super exciting. Summer also means Christmas is coming and bookings have officially closed for October and November. A couple of spots left for early December but photos will not be ready in time for Christmas. Newborns are always an exception and I will try to accomodate any new ones as long as you get in touch with me before your due date.

I have been a member of the ACOCP (http://www.acocp.org.au/) for a while now but the organisation has had a slow start in WA with getting the message out there. The community is a group of dedicated Australian photographers who donate their services to give the gift of photographic memories to families with seriously ill children. Spread the word!

This shoot involved capturing some memories for this little one who is travelling to Sydney this week to undergo amputation of her foot with the hope that this will allow her to be able to walk. She was full of spunk and energy and was incredibly mobile so no doubt nothing will stop her from getting up and going. Please keep her in your thoughts that this transition goes smoothly and allows her to make the progress in life she deserves.

School holidays are FABULOUS, no morning rush makes me a happy girl especially after nights like tonight where I am catching up on processing till the wee hours of the morning. Birds were twittering when I finally went to bed last and if those crazy friends of mine going to the gym wonder where I am - I'd hit my pillow only two hours before your alarms were going off! Kids in pjs till late morning and playing with all the kiddies in the neighbourhood, bring on the summer holidays I say!

Still enjoying the newborn boom with another two little newbies to photograph in the next week. Lucky clucky me :)

Really nearly just about closed bookings for the year. IF you have spoken/emailed me already I have accounted for you so dont stress if we haven't firmed up dates yet. I know I always get a spate of emails and calls after I post these posts, I haven't forgotten about you and if I have well then I will just feel extra guilty and fit you in anyway.

A friend of mine just emailed to ask if I was ok as she has been checking every week and I haven't posted!

So here I am. Admittedly the old blog is very far down on the 'to do' list every day especially since I have decided to go back to uni and do some further study. So now the list of evening jobs after the kids go to bed at night goes like this

clean up the bomb that has exploded in the kitchen and organise lunchboxes
catch up on photo processing, emails and ordering and then finally
try and cram in some study.

Tonight I have only made it to number 2 of course and as per my first degree I am dutifully avoiding number 3!

Photo wise things are busy and in the next few weeks I will have encountered a total late August baby boom. Not sure what was going on last December but judging by the amount of babies my friends and clients have been having there wasn't much on the telly.. or perhaps there was a blackout?!? Two born last week and two due this week :) YAY! I can't wait to meet them all.

I've had the pleasure of photographing a couple of little families in the past two weekends who were just gorgeous to watch. I love being able to view the photos at home after and seeing all the little family interactions that I have captured. Just so special...

Oh and for Christmas photos PLEASE take me seriously when I say YOU NEED TO BOOK NOW! Just catching up on a few shoots to add to the blog and send the images off to all the clients who are patiently waiting. Check your inbox because I AM UP TO DATE! Ok well not quite, this little guys mum has to wait a bit longer but getting there and this is a little sneak peek to tide her over.

The hardest age to photograph without a doubt is from about 14months through to whenever they become 'reasonable' ... perhaps 21? No seriously 3 year olds are genuinely great fun to photograph but that doesn't mean the terrible 2s are not doable. Its a great age to capture their personality and enthusiasm for doing what THEY want to do!

I've been allergic to cats well forever but I'm not around them that often that I sometimes forget. When going to shoots I usually remember to take a Zyrtec before heading off just in case. Well yesterday I didn't and 'achooo' how embarassing I was reduced to a snotting, snivelling mess within about 20 seconds of entering the house. I didn't even manage to get a picture of the culprit but this is the owners newest little addition to the family who is just a perfect little princess.
I have a new logo which will soon be used on my site and on all my business materials as well as being the watermark on images on my blog... I think its cute! Its a twirly whirly dhp!

Ok I am officially useless but this was at least seven posts in around about eight days so its a lot better than usual.
I'm off for about a weeks break so if you phone or email expect a slight delay in me getting back to you. I've spoken to all current clients in regard to this and any galleries will be extended as needed on my return. Bookings are currently running into mid/late June, remember if you are expecting a baby and would like photos please let me know ahead of time so I can make some room in my diary around your EDD.
I will leave you with a photo of my youngest Ebbie. She is two but will tell you she is three, so sad how time passes so fast once you are grown up yet when you are little and want to grow up the years take forever!

Sixth Day

These two are school friends of my kids and their mum has those picture recesses in her entry and main area. Gorgeous picture recesses with lighting and everything but she doesn't have anything in them!! Drives me crazy..... so we went round to try and solve the problem. This was the little man having a moment when he was more interested in playing than hanging out with me anymore but his beautiful big sister cheered him up :)
p.s. I'm having major mobile phone trouble, mine just keeps turning itself off constantly. Loose connection in the battery I'm thinking but its a total pain. What a wild weekend in Perth, despite the rain and cold I had a busy weekend so just catching up on work tonight. This little spunk was from a little while ago but I had been meaning to post his cute face and hadn't quite got there so here we go...

Oh and yes I know... its technically Sunday and I have missed a day, but I have a valid excuse the date/time is set to US time and really I haven't actually missed a day.

Oh and this just sums up the week really...

I negotiated with the kids all afternoon that if they behaved we would go to the DVD store and get the DVD's I had reserved for them. Got them into the bath early, out in their pjs so that when we got home they were all ready to watch. Drove to the store about 10 mins away, realised I didn't have my wallet so had to drive home. Grabbed my wallet back to the store in the rain and now the dark too. Get there and waste 10mins choosing a DVD for myself as I had a voucher for 3 new releases... line up at the counter only to be told that the two we reserved have not been returned even though they were due back yesterday!! Arghhhh.... oh gee you can just imagine how my 5 year old reacted when he found out we would not be watching Ben10 tonight just as I had promised him we would ALL day!

Just a quick one as I am running on empty after a late night doing processing work for this shoot. My youngest then decided to wake me at the totally un-mummy friendly time of 6am which is not normal for my super sleeper kids. Four hours sleep doesn't really cut it for me so I'm feeling like I won't make it into the office tonight.

Bad Blogger

Yes, I am officially a very bad blogger. I can't believe how bad I am considering its not like I am ever short of a few opinions or photos to go with them!
So here is my challenge to myself.... at least one photo every day for the next week. I'd like to say month but really thats like me saying.. no more chocolate! Its just not going to happen.
So here are a couple of absolutely stunning young ladies who I had the pleasure of spending a couple of hours with over the weekend. Such sweet little girls who were totally in love with each other, just the way little sisters should be.

Back up Back up

I bought myself a new external hard drive yesterday and I feel such relief from this one little purchase. I do already back up my images, I have an external hard drive, they are on my internal hard drive AND for my personal images I have a THIRD portable external drive. I know slightly overkill. BUT, one of my external hard drives came to a grinding hault recently while we were moving house, luckily I had everything still on my internal drive and quickly backed up that again. It is like feeling naked and exposed, extremely vulnerable. I don't know what I would do if I lost my images! Not just my clients but all my personal memories. I am actually going to buy myself a fire proof safe, wouldn't you be spewing if you stole my safe and found it contained nothing but backed up personal images on cd!! No diamonds in this household!

Seriously I know many people that have lost their personal images when their hard drives crashed, please, please back up your images!

That being said, last week I revisited with a family whose son I photographed about three and a half years ago now. He is now a big brother and totally proud as punch.

a few months on.... I mean seriously this child is one of those children that you just think, WOW its just really unfair to the rest of us ordinary people that one person can be just SO exquisitely good looking. Ohhh the excitement! Can you believe this mum was 39 weeks! I got the giggles when I saw her because she didn't even look pregnant, third baby too!

That will do for now, its well after midnight which does appear to be my usual updating hour. I have much more to share but I will just leave you in anticipation.

I have been super duper busy with shoots coming out of my ears the past few weeks. Barely getting time to get the post processing work done so the poor blog is feeling a touch lonely.
I just had to stop tonight and add these photos. WOW I wish I lived on this property it was just totally stunning, the light was just devine and they had two utterly gorgeous boys as well. This city girl was also highly amused by the racket the horses were making. Everytime one would 'whinny' I would get the giggles - ahhh I think mum thought I was a bit of a nutter.

I have a heap more to share but will have to wait till after Easter, wishing everyone a wonderful break with their families.

Long summer days....

The weekend was extremely busy full of shoots every day and I managed to pick up a bit of a bug which left me flat out in bed for two days so have now fallen quite behind in my processing. Trying to catch up now before we head down south for the long weekend to celebrate being Australian with half of my neighbourhood - almost quite literally. Everyone will have their images in their inbox by two weeks from their shoot date. I promise!

Monday night I met this little one at the beach on an absolutely perfect evening for spending time on our beautiful coastline. So perfect that it inspired me to take my own three down the night after for a swim and dinner, where of course it was howling with wind and no chance for eating anything let alone keeping a hat on your head down by the water. That is my luck! So here she is in all her four year old glory!

A wee little one who was incredibly kind to me especially considering at 8 weeks she was pushing the 'newborn' photo limit and wasnt really into being disturbed while sleeping.

A special little girl from the east who was just angelic especially with all that we put her through

putting her to sleep and then intentionally waking her again well before she really wanted to get up. Still all smiles and happy to listen to my silly noises!

Recovering from moving house - WOW someone please remind me not to do that again in a hurry - as well as Christmas and not one but two of my children having birthdays in the past fortnight.

Back in full swing already with January fully booked and squeezing in a couple of newborns in the next week too. February sees the return to school and my middle child starting full time (just quietly I AM a little sad about this, no really I am!) so I plan to run some specials and incentives for all the people happy to do mid week sessions. Stay tuned for more info on that next week.

Today was a totally fantabulous day for photography!

I am all but done with client shoots for the season, not only am I taking Christmas holidays but my family and I are moving into a BRAND SPANKING new house that we have been building, well... forever! I apologise now to all the clients that I have grilled over where they got their curtains/tiles/kitchen splashbacks from over the past few months, I have appreciated all the hints and tips along the way.

In my attempt to be organised for the big move that is happening hopefully in the days right before the jolly fat man arrives, I thought it best to get my Christmas cards ready now. In my household Christmas cards means an updated photo for all the relatives and with three young children this is not always easy to achieve.

My beloved children who I have not shared with you all before for the following reasons are....
1) Ebony who is two and really we all know how fun two year olds are to photograph
2) Ashton is four and HIGHLY allergic to my camera, eye contact may result in Decepticons springing from my lens and coming to attack
and
3) Mikaela is eight and well apparently having a photographer for a mum really isn't very cool.

Today however they were little angels! I am extremely proud of my gorgeous children who were well rewarded for all sitting nicely for long enough for me to get this as their present for me for Christmas... I think it will become a gallery wrapped canvas for my entrance :)

I LOVE photographing newborns, brand spanking new fresh out of the womb, I have great fun with toddlers but by far the just sitting up. soft, round babes around the age of 6-9months are just pure perfection.

This little one was no different, just oh so easy and oh so gorgeous too!

Last Bookings!

Believe it or not Christmas is coming and I only have three spots left for shoots that will have images ready in time for Christmas. These dates fall on the 27th of October, 3rd of November and 10th of November so if you want to take one of these please be quick to book.

I will continue to shoot newborns as needed over the holiday period but only for those that let me know they are expecting beforehand. I have my own Christmas baby so I understand how hard it is to get things done around Christmas and its not fair that being born at Christmas means you don't get newborn photos but please just prewarn me that you are due. Regular sessions will recommence in February.

For now I am taking the first week of the school holidays off to be with my family. Contact will only be available during this time via email and even then I might be a bit slower than normal getting back to you. I will return to work on October the 8th.

Ok so this is not always going to be about photos... I like to pass on cool finds as well.

I discovered this cool little toy maker http://www.hopskipjump.typepad.com/ a while ago with the most irresistable hand made stuff. She released some monkeys for sale over at Etsy today which were just adorable. I so wanted one, like REALLY wanted one but figured an adult doesn't really need to spend $80 on a stuffed monkey for themselves do they?? They sold out in about 2.2 seconds, literally, so I missed out. Perhaps a good thing.

busy weekend

This weekend I was run off my feet after a little baby boom in town which left me trying to squeeze a couple of newborns into an already booked out weekend. I was left a little worse for wear so am now running behind with my proofing - I am sick and my kids are sick so there is not much joy going around my household at the moment.
Thankfully I get to look at these sweet little faces for the next few days as I get caught up to speed. This little chubster was the first babe off the ranks Saturday morning and did a great job keeping her gorgeous mum and me busy for a few hours!

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of spending three days photographing a bunch of three and four year olds at the local pre kindy. Three is a wonderful age for having photos the kids are so easy to interact with and get natural expressions from.

I just received the majority of the photos in the mail today so they are almost ready for delivery. Today I met these two little 'blossoms' at their place for a few photos. Gorgeous little R is two and didn't really want anything to do with me... his poor mum was sad that he didn't want his photos taken..

I hope this makes her afternoon a bit brighter.

His little sister of course being the ideal 8 month old age was a little angel who was more than happy to perform for me.

My MOST favourite thing as a photographer is being invited back to photograph a child or baby that I have already met before. It is especially beautiful to see how those little scrunched up newborns turn into toddlers with personalities all of their own.

Yes I know what self respecting photographer does NOT have a blog these days? Well apparently that would be me, so here we are. I have been promising to update the site for well... close on two years now. Seeing this here is so much easier to update perhaps you will see more frequent new images by logging on here. Well in saying that I am a notorious overblogger so I will try and restrain somewhat.

I thought this would be a nice place to put up client 'sneak peeks' as well as giving would be clients a little insight into my work and the how and why of what I do.

Oh and my mum is the ultimate gramma nazi so I make every effort to upset her with my poor use of punctuation and context so try to overlook and read between the lines :)
